The Chic-Chocs Mountain Lodge: A Place Worth Revisiting

This testimonial is sponsored by Sépaq.
Margo Pfeiff began her career as a freelance journalist and photographer in 1980. Born in Vancouver, British Columbia, she moved to the province of Québec in 1989 and now lives in Knowlton, in the Eastern Townships. She has read extensively about Québec, and she is lucky enough to be able to go on ski trips every year for her work. She stayed at the Chic-Chocs Mountain Lodge in winter 2009.

I had wanted to stay at the Chic-Chocs Mountain Lodge in the Matane Wildlife Reserve for a long time. I had read a lot about the Lodge and it was receiving great press. However, when I went there in March 2009, I really wasn’t sure what to expect.

Since the snowcat vehicle that was supposed to take us up the mountain had broken down, we had to travel in an old 1950s Bombardier B12. From the start, I felt a kind of magic. It was like going back in time in the middle of nowhere. I felt completely cut off from the rest of the world, but at the same time I was surrounded by warm and friendly people.

The Lodge is impressive and very comfortable; the innkeeper gave us a warm welcome. The chef is really good too. While we were skiing and working up an appetite in the deep snow, we were thinking about the meal waiting for us at the end of the day, which helped to keep us going!

Following the example of the innkeeper, the guides were incredible. A few of the people staying at the Lodge when I was there didn’t know much about mountain ski conditions—the guides explained how to use the equipment, avoid avalanches and what safety measures to take in a straightforward and reassuring manner.

My whole stay was fantastic. I’ve been to the Rockies and stayed in many wonderful lodges, but the quality offered at the Chic-Chocs Mountain Lodge is exceptional, and that applies to the whole experience. This lodge is probably the most impressive I’ve stayed in so far.

Since I travel a lot, I rarely visit the same place twice, but I’d go back to the Chic-Chocs Mountain Lodge in a heartbeat!
